    The wetland borders the river basin north of Hualien Bridge (excluding the bridge) on the southwest and extends northeast to the 6-meter isobaths from the coast.

  • Introduction

    This is a natural coastal wetland located at Hualien Estuary in the Hualien River basin that encompasses land, river and ocean areas. Changes tend to occur at sensitive areas such as the sandbanks within the wetland, the brackish water and the effluent. Typhoon or torrential rain may result in changes that affect the local habitat.
    This wetland is located at the midpoint of the 4 natural coastal and estuary wetlands, and has become an important intermediate resting and breeding ground for migratory and transient wintering birds. It is designated as Important Bird Area (IBA) No.43.

  • Ecological resources of importance

    The estuary habitat at this wetland is quite comprehensive. Land animals, especially birds, gain the most attention, including 51 families and 204 species. Among them, 35 are protected species, and 7 of them are listed in the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS). There are 8 endemic species and 23 endemic subspecies.
    This area offers a great variety of butterfly, dragonfly and amphibian species. There are 7 families and 82 species of butterflies; 5 families and 26 species of odonatan; 5 families and 11 species of amphibian. In the water, there are 24 families and 73 species of fish, 4 families and 16 species of crustaceans in the fresh, saline and brackish water. In addition, 80 families and 245 species of plants are recorded.

  • The current situation and potential threats of wetlands

    The wetland area has been shrunk by illegal dumping of refuse and waste soil from construction, as well as wastewater discharge from KuangHua Industrial Park. Establishment of refuge is imminent in the wetland.
