The wetland is located in Jinyang Village of Nanao Township, Yilan County. The elevation is between 700 and 1,500 m. At 1,236 m, Yu’an Mountain is the highest peak. The wetland is surrounded by Heping River watershed and the ridgelines on the upper reaches of Nan River in Nanao, creating a sharp drop in elevation and a diamond-shaped valley surrounded by mountains on all sides.

Nanao Important Wetland includes a broadleaf forest and natural lake that serves the flood pulsing function. It is also the breeding ground for many rare animals and plants. The lake is formed by the converging streams in the surrounding. The water flows through the south into the wetland and Aohua River, and finally converges with Heping River. The wetland is surrounded by misty clouds all year round. Hence, the lake is also called the Mystery Lake. It is an ancient alpine lake with thick sedimentation on the bottom. The lake is shallow and relies on the rainwater for replenishment.

This wetland encompasses the mountain and water body. In terms of mountain vegetation, silver grass is the dominant species, while Sparganium fallax graebn, a rare species in Taiwan, grows around the fringe of the lake or within the marsh wetland.

Swinhoe's Pheasant, Mandarin Duck, Asian Crested Goshawk, Crested Serpent Eagle, Collared Pigmy Owlet, Collared Owl, Spotted Scops Owl, White-throated Laughing Thrush, and Rufous Laughing Thrush.

Formosan Barking Deer, Formosan Macaque, Formosan Gem-faced Civet, Formosan Hill Partridge, Green-backed Tit, and White-tailed Blue Robin.

Although the authority has installed a control gate and occasionally patrols the outbound route, the wetland still suffers vandalism by visitors and hunters.
